How to Make the Most of Advent with Kids

As a Christian parent, I am always looking for opportunities to teach my kids about Jesus. Opportunities often arise in the small, every day moments of life–a beautiful day pointing us to the beauty of our God; a sibling argument highlighting our need for Jesus’ help and patience; a disappointment at school bringing us to prayer together. I’m thankful for these daily moments, and I also find opportunity to share Jesus with my kids in the bigger moments of celebration that our family leans into, like Advent.

Advent is such a wonderful time to lean into teaching your kids about Jesus! They are already excited about Christmas, so it’s an opportunity to build off the momentum they already feel and let it fuel our learning and worship as a family. There are many ways to lean into Advent with kids, but a few that I’ve found to be meaningful include:

  • Centering the season on Christ
  • Making use of Imagery
  • Serving others
  • Making memories together
  • Engaging with God through Scripture and prayer
  • Being present more than busy
