Christmas has become my kids’ favorite holiday of the year. They love it so much in fact, that they convinced me to celebrate Christmas in July this past summer. Now, I get it, everyone loves Christmas–but for our family, one tradition in particular has made it a cause for celebration all month long—Advent Cards.
And not just any Advent cards. THE Advent Cards. The ones I looked high and low for and couldn’t find. The ones that have the whole birth of Jesus laid out in easy to remember Scripture verses, with illustrations that actually go along with the passage, and contain Christmas cheer prompts to make memories together as a family. Those Advent Cards. When I searched everywhere and couldn’t find them, I made them–along with my friend Tasha from The House on 10th who created the beautiful illustrations.
And they have become a tradition that my kids (and even my husband and I) look forward to year after year after year. I love how my kids hear the Scripture everyday and we take time to recap and remember each part of the story. I love how they consider the illustrations and how they relate to the passage. And I love the Christmas cheer prompts that are just the right mix of simple and fun, intentional and memory-making.
We use the cards at a meal, reading the Scripture and discussing the illustration. Then, whenever we can find time later in the day we try the Christmas cheer prompt. Whether it’s a Christmas music dance party, or drinking hot chocolate; a cozy Christmas movie night in or an outdoor Christmas scavenger hunt walk–we adapt the activity to work for us and have fun with it.
The calendar that pairs with the Advent Cards helps me to know what activities are coming ahead of time, and helps me to plan for the week ahead. I love how the Monday activities are low-key and easy, and the weekends are a bit more involved and family-oriented. The activities even help your kids to think about the needs of others (which I find to be a real win).
We can’t wait to start using these cards December 1st and I hope you’ll join us and use them too!
